Buying contact lenses in the UAE: prescriptions, prices and delivery
Contact lenses are sold everywhere in the UAE, from opticians to pharmacies to delivery apps, and the convenience hides a few things worth knowing. This guide covers how a lens prescription differs from your glasses, which replacement schedule suits you, coloured lenses, lens care in a hot country and what delivery is realistic.
Your contact lens prescription is not your glasses prescription
A lens sitting on the eye behaves differently from one sitting 12 millimetres in front of it. For stronger prescriptions the power is adjusted for that distance, so a glasses prescription of −5.00 may become −4.75 in a contact lens. The prescription also carries two numbers that glasses never need: the base curve (how curved the lens is, matched to your cornea) and the diameter. Finally, a contact lens prescription names the brand, because the same power in a different material or design fits and feels differently.
This is why a contact lens fitting is a separate appointment. The optometrist measures your cornea, puts trial lenses on, checks how they move when you blink and confirms your vision with them in. Only then can the lenses be ordered with confidence, and only then can you reorder online without guessing.
Daily, monthly or yearly: choosing a replacement schedule
| Schedule | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Daily disposable | Occasional wear, sport, travel, allergies, anyone who dislikes cleaning | Highest cost per wearing day if you wear lenses every day; no solution needed |
| Two-weekly or monthly | Everyday wearers who will clean and store lenses properly | Needs a solution and a case; lenses accumulate deposits, so the schedule must be respected |
| Yearly (conventional) | Specialist or unusual prescriptions, some coloured and prosthetic lenses | Most care-intensive; replace sooner if comfort drops |
The honest arithmetic is that dailies cost more per month for a full-time wearer, but you save on solution, you never wear a lens that is past its best, and the risk of infection from poor hygiene is lower. Many people in the UAE settle on monthlies for the working week and keep a few dailies for the beach and the gym.
Astigmatism and presbyopia: toric and multifocal lenses
If your glasses prescription has a cylinder value, you may need a toric lens, which is weighted so it settles in the right orientation on the eye. Toric lenses are made in a narrower range of powers and axes, so a fitting matters even more, and non-stock combinations can take a few days to arrive. Multifocal contact lenses layer distance and reading power in one lens; they suit many people over 40 but involve a short adaptation period and sometimes a compromise on fine print. High astigmatism that falls outside standard ranges can be handled by extended-range toric lenses, which a specialist optician can order.
Coloured lenses: popular, and still a medical device
The Gulf is one of the world’s biggest markets for coloured contact lenses, and brands such as Bella and Sama are household names. Two things get forgotten in the enthusiasm. First, a coloured lens with no power is still a lens on your cornea, so it needs the same fitting, the same hygiene and the same replacement discipline as a clear one. Second, lenses from unlicensed sellers and beauty counters may have no traceable manufacturer, which is where the eye infections come from. Buy from a licensed optician, ask for sealed blisters with an expiry date, and if you also need vision correction, get the coloured lens made in your power rather than wearing it over glasses.
Lens care in a hot, dry, air-conditioned country
- Air conditioning dries lenses out. Keep preservative-free rewetting drops at your desk and in the car, and blink deliberately during long screen sessions.
- Dust and sand get under lenses in a second. If an eye starts to sting, take the lens out, rinse it with solution, never with water, and reinsert only if it is clean and intact.
- Never use tap water on lenses or cases. Water carries organisms that cause serious corneal infections; this applies to showers and swimming pools too.
- Replace the case monthly and let it air-dry upside down. A fresh case costs less than a single bottle of solution.
- Sunglasses are still needed. Some lenses include a UV filter, but it covers only the cornea; the rest of the eye and the eyelids need a proper pair of sunglasses.
- Heat ruins lenses. Do not leave boxes in a parked car; a dashboard in July can exceed the storage temperature on the packaging.
Buying online: what to check
- The listing shows the brand, power, base curve and diameter, and you can enter yours exactly.
- The seller is a licensed optical retailer in the UAE, not a marketplace reseller with no address.
- Boxes arrive sealed, with a lot number and at least several months before expiry.
- Toric and multifocal listings let you specify cylinder, axis and addition per eye.
- There is a person to message if you are unsure whether to reorder the same lens after a year.
Established opticians increasingly sell the full range online; Optic One’s contact lens store, for instance, organises lenses by daily, monthly, toric, multifocal and coloured, and offers a power calculator for converting a glasses prescription as a starting point before a fitting confirms it.
Delivery: what is realistic
For lenses in stock, next-day delivery across the UAE is normal and most shops offer it. Toric, multifocal and unusual powers are often ordered from the distributor and take two to three working days. Inside Abu Dhabi city a few opticians now run their own couriers: Optic One, for example, delivers contact lenses, lens solutions and reading glasses within 30 to 60 minutes inside Abu Dhabi city limits, roughly 19 km from its Hamdan Street shop, daily from 10:00 to 22:30, with a small fee on orders up to AED 100, a smaller one up to AED 200 and free above that. In Dubai the same shop offers same-day delivery on selected CooperVision lenses. Timings are confirmed on WhatsApp before dispatch, which is worth checking on a Friday afternoon.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy contact lenses in the UAE without a prescription?
Some sellers will, but a licensed optician will ask for a current prescription or offer a fitting, and that is the version you want. Lenses that have never been fitted are the ones that cause trouble.
How often should my contact lens prescription be renewed?
Once a year is the usual standard. The check confirms the lens still fits, the cornea is healthy and the power has not drifted.
Are coloured lenses with power available?
Yes, including toric versions for astigmatism from some brands. Expect a slightly narrower range of powers than clear lenses.
Can I sleep in my lenses?
Only in lenses specifically approved for extended wear, and only if your optometrist agrees. Sleeping in ordinary lenses sharply raises the risk of infection.
